Choreographic
Process
Drifting Circles is a 12 minute excerpt from Bria Tyner's Capstone Project surrounding the imposter phenomenon in black women who navigate dance programs in higher education.
Bria Tyner collaborated with Jacob Guyton who composed an original sound score for this excerpt. The choreographic process was inspired by the dancers ability to reflect on key enablers that contribute to their ability to embrace individuality in educational settings. This work highlights the urge to conform and oppose societal norms of shared and unshared spaces.
Initial Question
What supports you as you maintain your individuality in professional and educational settings?
Dancers Response
Each dancer expressed that family, friends and prayer was a key factor in them staying connected to their individuality.

Section II: The Pulse
In the process of creating the group section, we began with a series of spatial pathways to highlight the way people move continuously about their day without noticing the burdens societal norms place on marginalized groups of people.
Final Section: Sunshine Before Retrograde
In the process of creating the final section of Drifting Circles, we began by exploring movement phrases that were inspired by the initial question. These individual phrases represent the desire to break away from the collective to express oneself authentically.
